Walks in Euskadi

They are simple routes that oscillate between the 20 minutes and 2 hours, that adapt to the needs and profile of each visitor.

Routes by the Green Ring of Bilbao

Although surprising due to the image to which we are accustomed after its deep transformation, the city of Bilbao offers a series of walks in the surroundings of the city, in its Green Ring, which constitute an ideal complement of the visit of this modern city.

  • Deustu – Monte Banderas

Monte Banderas is the last highlight of the Artxanda string. From there you can see the last port crane, the rest of an industrial past made now art.

  • Uribarri – Pikotamendi

On the hillside of Artxanda there are quiet groves and rest areas.

  • Otxarkoaga – Monte Abril

A strictcircular route between the trees of Etxebarria Park and the forests that surround Mount Abril.

  • Begoña – Santo Domingo

The Amatxu de Begoña is the equator of this pleasant urban walk that begins in the grounds of the Mine del Morro and crosses the populous neighborhood of Santutxu and the tranquil Arabella to climb to the skirts of Artxanda.

  • Ibaiondo – Arnotegi

The silence of the paths of Arnotegi and the swamp of Bolintxu make it difficult to believe that the city of Bilbao is so close.

  • Abando-Pagasarri

Pagasarri is the most popular mount that surrounds El Botxo and the route is excellently marked and is accessible from several neighborhoods.

  • Errekalde – Arraiz

Under the watchful eye of Pasagarri rises a more humble but ideal summit to connect with other routes or pass towards Kastresana and Alonsotegui.

  • Basurtu-Zorroza – Kobetamendi

Kobetamendi is the last top of the south chord of the city before ending in Zorroza. Double and crowned by the remains of two forts in ruins

Mountains in Donostia-San Sebastián

The city of Donostia-San Sebastián offers many options for excursions. Climb Mount Igueldo, a place with magnificent views and also a lot of fun thanks to its charming amusement park. We recommend taking the funicular, the oldest in the Basque Country, in operation since 1912, to observe and photograph the city from a spectacular perspective.

Other options include Mount Urgull with the Castillo de la Mota at the top, now the House of History, which showcases the military history, sieges, and attacks suffered by the city. A walk up Mount Ulía, a former whale-watching site, is a true natural park in the heart of the city.

Walk through the Salburua Wetland

It is a wetland area made up of several lagoons—Arkaute and Betoño being the main ones—along with grassy areas and a small oak grove. Considered one of the most valuable continental wetlands in the Basque Country, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the European Natura 2000 Network. The park can be explored on foot or by bike through various trails that surround and connect the main lagoons. Rivers and streams, wetlands, island forests among crops, and small villages typical of the Llanada Alavesa are some of the environments you will find when walking through the parks of the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the peri-urban area of Vitoria-Gasteiz. A total of 10 walks through the parks of the Green Belt and the nearby rural-natural area can be comfortably completed on foot in less than two hours. A 30.8-kilometer circular route, ideal for cycling, links the parks of the Green Belt like a grand tour of the city. Beyond the Green Belt, the tour connects with other routes in the Álava Green Route Network, which provide access to the region’s main natural spaces. The Ataria Interpretation Center and two bird observatories provide a way to discover and enjoy the natural wealth of the area.
