The celebrations begin in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 4 August with the traditional txupinazo (opening rocket) and the descent of Celedón in Virgen Blanca Square. Over the following days, the city’s streets come alive with blusas and neskas groups, brass bands, parades, giants and big-head figures, concerts, fireworks and many other festive activities.
On 8 August, the celebrations move to Donostia/San Sebastián with the traditional cannon shot fired from Alderdi Eder and the singing of the Artillero anthem. Throughout the city’s Semana Grande, visitors can enjoy concerts, children’s activities, the classic open-water swim from Getaria to Donostia/San Sebastián, and the renowned International Fireworks Competition.
On 14 August, it is Zarautz’s turn, with the traditional txupinazo in Lege Zaharren Enparantza. The programme includes rowing regattas, professional Basque pelota matches, giants and big-head figures, fireworks and concerts along the seafront promenade.
Finally, Bilbao launches its famous Aste Nagusia on 22 August, when Marijaia appears on the balcony of the Arriaga Theatre following the opening speech and the txupinazo. During the nine-day festival, konpartsak (festival groups), gastronomic competitions, traditional Basque rural sports (herri kirolak) and concerts fill the city with celebration.
