Moyúa Square Bilbao Destinos Euskadi

The Plaza de Federico Moyúa, better known as Plaza Moyúa or Plaza Elíptica, is one of the most important neuralgic centers of Bilbao. This place, built in the 1940s according to the design of architect José Luis Salinas, has witnessed the urban transformation of the city. Sixty years after its creation, in 1997, it was remodeled by his son, Manuel Salinas, who knew how to respect the essence of the original design and add modern elements that enhance its functionality and attractiveness.

The square maintains its characteristic elliptical shape and is surrounded by English and French style flowerbeds that give it a distinguished and natural air. As part of the remodeling, modern steel lampposts and functional benches were added, elements that coexist in harmony with the historic elegance of the place. In addition, the emblematic original fountain was restored, a symbol of the square that continues to be a visual reference point for the people of Bilbao.

Surrounded by buildings that are architectural gems, such as the neo-Flemish-style Chavarri Palace and the Carlton Hotel, inspired by the French Second Empire, Plaza Moyúa is a veritable open-air museum. These monuments, steeped in history and majesty, give the square a solemn and unique character that contrasts with the bustle of the streets that converge on it.

The square connects eight of the city’s main thoroughfares, such as Alameda Recalde, and its proximity to the Bilbao Estuary reinforces its importance as a strategic point and meeting place. Here, locals and visitors alike can enjoy a day of shopping in the nearby luxury stores, relax on a terrace or simply stroll through its gardens while admiring the combination of tradition and modernity.

Plaza Moyúa is much more than an urban space; it is a symbol of the spirit of Bilbao, a place that combines history, art and daily life, consolidating itself as one of the favorite meeting places for those who wish to discover the essence of Bilbao.
