San Nicolás of Bari Church

Iglesia San Nicolas Bilbao

Designed by Ignacio de Ibero, it was built in 1756, and is noted for its striking Baroque facade topped by two towers. It was a meeting point for sailors before going to sea, and it is said that in 1812 the temple was chosen by the General Assembly of Bizkaia to add their signature to the liberal Spanish Constitution (the Constitution of Cádiz).

Exterior and interior restoration has allowed the church to recover its splendour, eliminating added details and revealing again the quality of the Ganguren stone masonry from Galdakao.

Its interior, an octagon within a square, houses altarpieces and sculptures by Juan de Mena.
