On 5 September 1936, rebel forces under the command of Colonel Beorlegui took the city after weeks of resistance, siege and fire, forcing thousands of people into exile. To mark the 90th anniversary, Irun City Council has organised a commemorative programme to keep historical memory alive and remember those who suffered during the war and the repression that followed.

From 3 to 19 September, the Carlos Blanco Aguinaga Centre for Culture and Creativity will host an exhibition dedicated to the children who were forced into exile as a result of the war. Around 40 historical photographs will also offer visitors the opportunity to compare different streets and buildings in Irun in 1936 with how they look today.

The programme will also include a range of educational activities and historical re-enactments. On 6 September, San Juan Square will recreate several scenes from the period, including a field hospital, a recruitment office and a vehicle area featuring a historic car and motorcycle.
