Euskal Jira

August (Irun)

Euskal Jira Irun

The Euskal Jira is a festivity to remember customs, hobbies and the way of life of the Basque society in olden times, which neighbourhood associations, cultural associations, gastronomic society have recovered, organising a festivity around the day.

The Irungo Euskal Jira is held on the afternoon of the first Saturday in August. The main singularity of this festivity that makes it different from all other Basque festivities is the participation of the gurdias pulled by oxen; carriages on which typical scenes are reconstructed (generally buildings, customs or well-known places in Irun) of the Irun society from decades ago.

These gurdias parade through the centre of the city until they come to Plaza Urdanibia, where the festivity continues with music and traditional Basque dances.
