KUTXA ENTREGA

A fiesta closely linked to the sea, the Kutxa Entrega or handing over of the Kutxa (box) takes place in Hondarribia on July 25, when the fishermen go in procession from the headquarters of their brotherhood to the parish church. This takes place on July 25, the holiday of Santiago, which is the day on which the new abbot takes possession of his new post. The "Mareantes" Brotherhood is governed by a Senior Abbot, two "Mayors of the sea", three Junior Abbots and a Secretary. This box (Kutxa), symbolises the one in which the money, books and documents of the brotherhood were kept in the old days.
