| On September 8, Hondarribia celebrates
with a thunderous and colourful "alarde" the vows made to the Virgin of Guadalupe in
1639 in gratitude for breaking the siege imposed by the Prince of Condé. Thousands of
participants, grouped in 20 companies, walk around the streets and squares with a
mixture of shots, drums, fifes and so on. About midday, they climb to the sanctuary
of Guadalupe, on Mount Jaizkibel. It is a fine sight to see the company of Atxeros,
who wear spectacular caps made of sheepskin on their heads.
