Txakoli

The Basque Country is unique and no visit would be complete without trying Txakoli, one of the region´s best known wines.

txakoliIt is a young, fruity, slightly sparkling white wine with low acidity made from grapes grown on the mountain sides near the sea under the gentle breeze of the Cantabrian Sea.

The Txakoli wineries offer guided tours which explain how this lively wine is made and that it should be drunk within the same year as bottling. The guided visits include a chance to taste txakoli as well as other local produce such as Gilda pintxos, anchovies and tuna.

In the areas all around Zarautz and in Bidasoa the landscape is scattered with vineyards and small txakoli wineries which welcome visitors.

Two other regional Appellations of Origin include Arabako Txakolina and Bizkaiako Txakolina, which also offer guided tours to their vineyards and wine tasting.
